What a busy spring semester we have had! From meeting our New Scholars, to growing as a chapter at our first ever retreat, we have kept ourselves focused on growth as individuals and unity as a group. Although nearly every weekend was filled with fun and productive activities, there were a few that stood out above the rest. Our Knockerball tournament, chapter retreat and New Scholar Day have definitely been the highlights of our semester.
Group unity is one of the core values of the Evans Scholarship, so our chapter thought that having a group retreat would be the perfect way to grow together as a chapter. This one-day event offered Scholars an escape from the stress of schoolwork and allowed us to learn more about the people who we live with. The theme of the retreat was "Because We Said So." It was based on the idea that we will follow through with any goals that we say we are going to achieve. This mindset creates a culture of accountability in our chapter, because if a Scholar is lacking motivation to achieve a goal, another Scholar can remind him or her of the importance of following through with what they set out to do. The first-ever chapter retreat was a huge success and we cannot wait for next year.
Giving back to our community is very important for our chapter, so our first-ever Knockerball tournament was one of the best events we put on this semester. Mental health and off-campus safety are two issues that are very close to our chapter, so we felt that we needed to do our part and support organizations that seek to promote safety and mental health awareness around campus. To raise money, we hosted a Knockerball, also known as bubble soccer, tournament. Teams from the OSU community spent an afternoon playing Knockerball and raising awareness for mental health and off-campus safety. Through our efforts, our chapter was able to raise over $3,000 to donate to Mental Health America and the Stephanie Hummer Fund. This event has so much potential, and we know that it will continue to grow in the future.
New Scholar Day is not only exciting for our active Scholars, but it is also a huge day for the incoming Evans Scholars. This year we have 23 New Scholars from all over Ohio and even some from Chicago and the East Coast. The New Scholars spent the day getting acquainted with each other and learning about what it really means to be an Evans Scholar. We are very excited for them to join us in the fall.
It is hard to believe that this semester is coming to an end. Time really does fly when you are having fun. The only thing left for this year is to celebrate our graduating seniors who are looking forward to starting a new journey in life. The summer may be near, but we are already looking forward to next semester.
